Well, now they’re categorized.
Your small, otherwise unimpressive, kingdom is suddenly one of the strongest powers in the land. This is due to the sole reason that, unlike other rulers, you’re happy to work with the local orcs, goblins, dragons, and several other races that are usually attacked on sight.
“The first rule of diplomacy,” you say, “is really quite easy. Just be honest and kind.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, that’s it. The orcs that everyone complains about all the time, the roving bands that attack and are so viscous?”
“How did you deal with them? They’ve repelled the Golden Armies of Paladramus!”
You shrug. “I asked their leader what they wanted, we drank a couple of pints of truly hideous orc mead, and I gave them seven hundred acres of land.”
“What? That is almost a fifth of the total land of your kingdom!”
Again, you shrug. “Yeah but it’s largely that barren dessert up north. We weren’t using it, the orcs really wanted it. Apparently they’re almost like lizards and love sunning themselves on hot rocks so the dessert is actually perfect for them.”
“Really? That was it?”
“I mean we have some more complicated trade deals. Water, crops and such in exchange for some stuff you can only really get out of the dessert. There’s a mine over there and most important our northern border is that expansionist jackass.”
“The Golden Army!”
“Yeah ever since Grammark beat the crap out of them a couple years back they don’t want to have anything to do with the orcs. And we’re buddies now so it works out for everyone I think.”
Thinking about the cast of Arknights and how everyone is haunted by specters of Home. How so many of their stories are either "you CAN'T go home again" or "you MUST go home again". The phrase "you can't get well in the place that made you sick" and what it means for Rhodes Island to be a literal roving place of healing.
I may need to write an essay on this.
i think a lot about how Rhodes Island is simultaneously characterized as a home, but it is also always transitory. something about how the playable versions of any given operator is just a snippet of them from a certain point in time and that it's more than likely they'll depart, move on from this part of their life, and never come back, no matter how much we depend on them. Mountain eventually kills whoever it is at Rhine Lab he's trying to get revenge on and goes back to his family's company. Thorns talks like he doesn't care about Iberia, but we know he would cast aside his humanity for the chance to fight for it for even one more day. Saria is only here because she wants to escape herself, but trying to sever her connection to Rhine only drags her deeper. I mean shit, Gravel literally only joins Rhodes after Victoria, when mechanically she's been the only thing holding my tenuous strategy together for the last three years.
Sure, there are people who stay. There are the Elite Ops, and most of the 3-4 stars. But only two of the Elite Ops are playable. They're not who we get to play as, they're not the point.
The point is the transience. The point is that the person we've come to rely on is only here for a few weeks or months or maybe a year. The point is that we're not an unstoppable army, building and amassing our power. Rhodes Island, as we are allowed to experience it, is an impossible collage of everyone who we've ever known, imagined together in a way they never actually could be. There is a tragedy knowing that none of this could be real, because they just. have to go home eventually.

Let me tell you, there's a queer club night in the UK called Gal Pals that caters exclusively to queer women and NBs and only plays music by women and when It's Raining Men came on last time you'd have thought the crowd was full of middle aged housewives. A banger is a banger is a banger, you just gotta let the music go innit

somehow instead of saying "as a treat", I've started using the phrase "for morale", as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.
and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.
